Getting Started

We know that getting a driver’s license in New Jersey is a big deal - both for a new driver and for parents.  We’re here to help you through the process and make it as simple as possible.

Below is an overview of what you’ll need to do.  We can fill you in on more details if you’d like, or visit the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission web site.

Please Note: This page outlines the early bird process for 16-year olds.  If you are older than 16, we can certainly help you get your New Jersey driver license as well.  Just contact us and we’ll let you know how we can help.

Requirements for 16 Year-Olds

Before Getting Your Learner's Permit

Three requirements must be met before getting your learner's permit:
  1. Written Test
  2. Vision Test
  3. Six-Hours behind the wheel
We offer the written and vision tests in our Moorestown office for our 16 year olds.  For those students who have taken the written test in school, you will only need to take your vision test.  Contact us to schedule an appointment.

Obtaining a Learner’s Permit

We make routine trips to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.  As part of our service, we will apply for your learner's permit and you will receive it after the completion of your three requirements.  Please contact us and we'll let you know what is needed.

Practice Driving and Get Educated

Once you receive your learner's permit, you may use your permit for personal driving with a three-year licensed New Jersey driver, 21 years of age or older, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.  You must practice supervised driving for a minimum of six months.

We also highly recommend that you expand your driver education with our  Defensive Driving course and Stick Shift Lessons.  Students who complete six hours of behind-the-wheel driving with South Jersey Driving School will be issued a “certified-trained driver” certificate to be presented to his/her insurance company for an insurance reduction.  Find out more about our classes here, or contact us
now to register.

Get Your Probationary License – Your road test

Once you turn 17 and have completed the above requirements, it’s time to get a probationary driver’s license.  As an optional service, we’ll pick you up and take you to your road test location.   We recommend a driving review lesson sometime prior to your road test appointment date.  Find out more about our Review Lessons here, or contact us now to register.

Get Your Basic Driver’s License

Once you turn 18 and have completed all of the above requirements, it’s time for the real thing!  You must go to the MVC with your 6-points of ID and apply for your basic driver's license.  You can now drive without hour or passenger restrictions.  Congratulations!

We know there’s a lot to do, and we’re here to help.  Just contact us, and we’ll help you get through the rest!
