Below are some answers to the most frequently asked questions we get here at South Jersey Driving School
What are the requirements for my 16 year old to get their NJ Permit?
  • Three requirements must be met before getting your learner’s permit:
    • Written Knowledge Test (NJ Permit Test)
    • Vision Test
    • 6 hour behind the wheel driver training
  • We offer the written knowledge test (NJ permit test) and vision tests in our Moorestown office for 16 year old drivers.  For those students who have taken the written knowledge test (NJ permit test) in school, you will only need to take your vision test. Contact us to schedule an appointment.
How do I obtain the NJ Learners Permit?

We make routine trips to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJ MVC).  As part of our service, we will apply for your NJ learners permit and you will receive it after the completion of your three requirements.  Please contact us and we’ll let you know what is needed.

What do you do after you get your validated NJ learners permit?

Once you receive your validated NJ learners permit, you may use your permit for personal driving with a three-year licensed NJ driver, 21 years of age or older, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.  You must practice supervised driving for a minimum of six months.

We also highly recommend that you expand your driver education with our Defensive Driving course and Stick Shift Lessons.  Students who complete a 6 hour behind the wheel driver training course with South Jersey Driving School will be issued a “certified-trained driver” certificate to be presented to his/her insurance company for an insurance reduction.  Find out more about our classes here, or contact us now to register.

What is the process to scheduling the NJ Road Test?

South Jersey Driving School will schedule the appointment to take the behind the wheel NJ Road Test when the learners permit is issued. The date of the exam will be listed on the lower center portion of the back side of the NJ learners permit. Most NJ Road Test appointments are scheduled for early morning on the date of the student driver’s 17th birthday.

Is there anything else I can do besides taking a 6 hour behind the wheel driver training course to improve my chances of passing the NJ Road Test the first time?

Yes! We will do everything we can to make sure you get your NJ drivers license, and are the safest driver possible. See our services page for more details.

Can you take our child to the NJ road test when the time comes?

Of course! As an optional service, we’ll pick you up and take you to your NJ road test location.  We recommend a driving review lesson sometime prior to your NJ road test appointment date.  Find out more about our new driver Review Lessons here, or contact us now to register.

What is the process like to getting your NJ Basic Drivers License?

Once you turn 18 and have completed all of the above requirements, it’s time for the real thing! You must go to the NJ MVC with your 6-points of ID and apply for your basic drivers license.  You’re done with the graduated drivers license (GDL) laws and you can now drive without hour or passenger restrictions. Congratulations!

We have a 16 yr. old, why must we go through a driving school?

The driving age in NJ is 17. The state of NJ has an “early bird route” that allows a student driver, at the age of 16, to drive with supervision only after they receive a minimum of 6 hours of behind the wheel driving instruction with a NJ state-certified driving school.

Can I take my 16 yr. old to the MVC and get the permit myself?

The driving school must do all that for you. In fact, if the student driver loses their permit, you must contact the driving school to get a replacement for him or her.

Do you have dual controls?

All of the South Jersey Driving School vehicles have a dual brake system, allowing the instructor to stop the car if (or when) necessary.  This is required by the state of NJ.

Do I still need to take the NJ Permit test if I am older than age 16?

Any new driver younger than 21 years old is required to complete the full New Jersey MVC graduated driver licensing (GDL) program. There are also restrictions for drivers over the age of 21.  For more information, you can click here, or feel free to call our office (856) 235-7333 to discuss your situation, and we will be happy to assist you.

Can I use MY car for a road test?

Yes you can, with some stipulation. It is not required that a driving school take your child to the road test; however, you MUST have an emergency brake in the middle of the front seats IF your vehicle has a full center console.  If the center console denies access to the brake pedal for an emergency stop by the inspector, you are not allowed to use that vehicle.

If you do not have a suitable vehicle, or if you would like to have South Jersey Driving School take your student driver to the test, we are happy to provide you with current pricing for this service and to get you on our schedule.  Please feel free to contact us at (856) 235-7333 or email us at info@southjerseydrivingschool.com.

Is there a way to obtain a discount on my auto insurance if my new driver or I am a South Jersey Driving School Customer?

You may be eligible for insurance discounts after completing the 6 hour behind the wheel training program and upon receiving the NJ practice permit. Check with your insurance provider for details.

Further, you can take a Drive Safer Basic Car Control and Defensive Driving Course, or our Defensive Driving Classroom Course, which will make you eligible to receive auto insurance discounts and even erase up to 2 points from your driver license.

Testimonials

At South Jersey Driving School, we take pride in our students’ success. We do our best to provide quality driver education and keep the process as simple and pleasant possible. We’ve had so many happy, successful students…we were voted the Best Driving School in Burlington County — thank you!

Here’s what some of them have to say:

  • I wanted to thank you all.  From my first initial phone call with Tony to an informative sit down with MaryBeth, your driving school is top notch.  The level of comfort you have given me and my daughter is great.  The instructor, Mark, was also great with constructive , positive comments which put my daughter's mind at ease and gave her the confidence to take control of her driving.  Your school is a must for any new driver.  You are all making a difference in teenagers' lives.  Kudos!

  • "Everything was great.  Sam felt very comfortable with his instructors.  It was a great experience."

Anne Mineo Mother of Sam, Marlton
  • If I had to give out an award for the best business and how it is designed to compliment the family of new drivers, it would be the South Jersey Driving School. From the moment my son and I walked through their doors, till the end of his driving lessons, it has been nothing but professional. From the warm welcome, to the respectful driving instructors, it made us feel so comfortable. The owners Marybeth and Tony and their staff made us feel like part of their family. It was far more than obvious that they cared about their business and us. Honest, knowledgeable, respectful and professionalism all wrapped up into one great business. With Appreciation and Gratitude

Debbie Lorynski Mother of Austin, Burlington Township
  • Thanks again to you and your staff for helping my mother keep her license.  Your instructor, Mike, was wonderful.  If my family, or anybody else, needs driving instructions, I will definitely recommend your company.

  • I just wanted to thank MaryBeth, Tony and George for the outstanding service we received this week.  The refresher lesson was great, and my daughter was well prepared for her test today.  The transport to the test, and guidance she received, were invaluable.  She felt confident and relaxed, which I believe made a huge difference in her test.  I will be sure to recommended your business in the future.  You will be seeing us again in two years when it's my son's turn!  Thanks again!!

  • I was so impressed with the instructors, as well as the owners and the office staff. They truly showed a personal interest in my daughter from the moment we walked in the door. Instructors George and Sean were amazing, and always offered positive reinforcement while effectively communicating what she needed to improve. I highly recommend this school to anyone who wants their teenager to learn to drive with safety as their first priority.

  • I wanted to thank you very much for working with our youngest son, Austin, as he begins preparations to acquire his drivers license. I really appreciate your company's professionalism. Your drivers, George and Mike, were outstanding, and the treatment we received from you and your office staff was superior as well. My wife and I were particularly appreciative of how you were so willing to answer all of our questions and concerns. Austin is the third of our children to utilize your company, and we have returned because of the great job you have done with our other two daughters. Please feel free to have any of your potential clients reach out to us, if needed.

  • My son took the “Written Test Prep” because he attends a private school that does not offer Driver’s Ed. This class was wonderful and Tony is a great instructor. There is no way my son could have studied the manual and passed the test, but by taking the class he was able to. Not only did he pass the test, but he got a 92 on it! He is now scheduled for his behind-the-wheel classes and is on his way to independence. I highly recommend the Written Test Prep class for anyone struggling to pass the written test or who has not had driver’s ed. in school. It is a well spent hour and a half.
